The British Engineerium, Hove: Julia Claxton Photography

Open day for 2011 Sunday 20th November - I've added a few more photos taken at this open day, but the majority of images are from 2010.

Photos from last year: Sunday October 10th 2010. Open day at The Engineerium in Hove. The sun shone, the scent of coal smoke wafted through the air, and a good head of steam was got up as a rare chance came to view the glories of this restored Victorian pumping station. The Engineerium houses a large collection of steam engines, including its famous fully restored and working No.2 Beam Engine. These gems were joined by a a range of visiting Traction Engines under steam outside, whilst inside scale models were on display. Robert Marks, Brighton's well known Victorian Ghost, gave guided tours in the persona of eminent Victorian engineer Thomas Hawksley. In 1858 Hawksley instigated the building of The Goldstone Pumping Station, which was opened by the Brighton and Hove Constant Water Company in 1866 to provide the city with a lasting water supply. A programme of restoration works is in progress at the Engineerium so it currently only has a couple of open days a year. As ever this latest was a huge success and hundreds of visitors flocked to see steam poetry in motion. Although there isn't a date set yet for the full re opening of the Engineerium, many agree it can't come soon enough!

All photos ©Julia Claxton. Open day at The Engineerium in Hove. A rare chance came to view the glories of The Steam Age at the restored Victorian Goldstone Pumping Station. It houses a large collection of steam engines, including its famous fully restored and working No.2 Beam Engine, which were joined by a range of visiting Traction Engines under steam outside, whilst inside scale models were on display. Robert Marks, Brighton's well known Victorian Ghost, gave guided tours in the persona of eminent Victorian engineer Thomas Hawksley who instigated the original construction in 1858.
