The first weekend of the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, the sun came out and I met up with the team members at Brighton Station where they were handing out maps to guide visitors around the gustatory trail of delights for the day. Then it was down to St Martins Vintners under the station where the wine festival was readying itself for the crowds with a fine selection of producers and suppliers offering tastings of both local wines and those from further afield, accompanied by fabulous Sussex cheeses from Cheese Please and a jaunty bit of jazz. On next to The Brighton Bake Off - a cake making competition and sale in aid of the Sussex Beacon charity presented by Jeremy Jacobs of Indulgence Cupcake Company. Celebrity judges Edd Kimber, winner of the BBC2's Great British Bake Off, comedian Mark Little, Andrea Fox of Juice FM and The Flirtinis had a tough task taste testing and marking highly creative decorations all on the theme of Brighton. The top 3 winning cakes were auctioned after the prize giving, and slices sold of all the cakes with proceeds going to the Sussex Beacon. Carrying on with the sweet theme it was off to Boho Gelato for "Around the World in 24 flavours" where fabulous ice creams and sorbets represented taste flavours from a variety of countries around the world including exotic combinations as Mango and Chili, Bacon and Maple Syrup, Lychees, Lemongrass and Ginger, Pavlova, Mojito, and the lovely Brighton Rose [winner of the children's Brighton Ice Cream making competition earlier this year]. Then it was on to Moshi Moshi to sample the Vegan Duck Yakatori, created to encourage a more restorative way of eating, depending less on proteins… oh forget the guff - it was just very good food as one would expect from Moshi, and would probably fool even my carnivore brother. By this time I was flagging a little, and am sorry to say didn't have the energy to sprint to the Hilton for the last half hour of the whisky festival. So much more to do tomorrow as well, but for now, a few photos of the highlights of today.
