As yet another storm is forecast lovers of Brighton's iconic West Pier gather on the beach in what might be a final farewell to the rusting structure. A large chunk of it collapsed on Wednesday - no one knows how long the rest of it can hold up, or whether it will still be there in the morning. As the sun sets on the pier for what may be the last time the soft murmur of the temporarily calm waves and distant cries of the gulls accentuate the eerie silence of the onlookers on the beach.
